Aave Initiates Significant Protocol Streamlining
In a move to reinforce its long-term resilience, leading DeFi lending protocol Aave has unveiled a comprehensive restructuring plan. The initiative, confirmed by founder Stani Kulechov, focuses on pruning underperforming assets and consolidating its multi-chain footprint.
Asset Pruning: Targeting Low-Utilization Reserves
Following an extensive protocol review, Aave will begin phasing out approximately 50 asset reserves that have seen consistently low adoption rates across its various deployments. These assets have failed to meet the protocol's updated benchmarks for market activity.
Additionally, 21 expired Pendle Principal Token (PT) assets will be retired from the reserves and replaced with newly minted tokens of the same type—a routine procedure for managing the lifecycle of such yield-bearing instruments.
The financial scale of this asset adjustment is substantial, encompassing roughly $98.1 million in total supplied value and $15.6 million in outstanding debt. The protocol will manage the unwinding or migration of these positions with a priority on user fund safety.
Deployment Consolidation: Winding Down on Six Chains
Parallel to the asset cleanup, Aave will execute an orderly cessation of its full deployment on six specific blockchain networks:
- Sonic
- Scroll
- zkSync
- Metis
- Soncium
- Aptos
These deployments collectively involve another 25 asset reserves. While the front-end interface and support will be withdrawn, users will be provided a clear grace period to exit their positions.
The Driving Force: An Upgraded Risk Framework
Kulechov emphasized that this restructuring is a direct implementation of Aave's newly formalized Risk Framework and Technical Asset Listing Framework. These frameworks introduce stricter criteria for asset onboarding, ongoing maintenance, and risk monitoring.
The primary goals are twofold: to mitigate economic risks posed by maintaining illiquid "zombie" assets (such as liquidation vulnerabilities) and to reduce the technical overhead and operational complexity of supporting low-activity deployments.
This shift signals a strategic pivot for Aave—from a phase of rapid multi-chain expansion to one focused on disciplined risk management and resource allocation. The protocol commits to continuous, dynamic risk assessment of all assets across its ecosystem, suggesting such optimizations may become a regular feature of its governance.
