From Acquisition to Independence: How Manus Thrived Under Regulatory Scrutiny

A subtle but significant update appeared on the website of AI Agent leader Manus on the evening of August 11th—a refreshed logo confirming the company's imminent return to independent operations. This marks the substantive unwinding of Meta's acquisition of Manus, concluding nearly two years of complex capital and regulatory maneuvering.

The Mega-Deal That Wasn't

In December 2025, Meta announced its acquisition of Manus for over $20 billion, making it the largest deal in the applied large language model space at the time and Meta's third-largest acquisition ever. However, this seemingly ideal union was not destined to be completed.

Chinese regulatory authorities promptly initiated a compliance review of the transaction. In April 2026, the National Development and Reform Commission issued a formal decision prohibiting the investment, requiring the parties to rescind the deal. Following the ruling, Manus and Meta swiftly began the separation process: data sharing was halted immediately, and employee access to Meta's internal systems was revoked, re-establishing clear operational boundaries between the two companies.

Silent Growth During the Review

Remarkably, throughout the months of regulatory review and corporate disentanglement, Manus's business not only persisted but flourished against the odds.

On the product front, the team maintained an impressive development cadence, releasing functional updates once or twice weekly. Market performance was even more striking: the company's revenue scale expanded approximately fivefold, with daily revenue climbing from $300,000 to nearly $1.5 million. A key milestone was reached as Manus's Annual Recurring Revenue surpassed the $300 million mark for the first time.

Perhaps most commendable was the team's cohesion. During this period of significant uncertainty, not a single member of the 150-person core team departed—a rare display of stability in the high-pressure tech industry.

Charting a New Course Alone

The final repurchase amount for the unwound acquisition and the company's subsequent capital structure have not yet been officially disclosed. What is clear is that the Manus core team is prepared for a fresh start.

In its official communications, the company stated it would continue advancing its product and technology roadmap with the mindset of a startup. This phrasing suggests that, freed from the constraints of a tech giant's architecture, Manus may pursue more agile and ambitious strategies in AI Agent development and commercialization. For the industry watching the practical application of artificial intelligence, a more independent and focused Manus is a prospect worth watching closely.
