AI: A Shared Global Endeavor, Not a Great-Power Prerogative

At a regular press briefing on June 5, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. She emphasized that AI is fundamentally transforming how we live and work, presenting a critical challenge that requires collective global engagement.

Moving Beyond Rivalry Towards Collaborative Governance

Mao Ning underscored that the benefits of AI advancement must be accessible to all nations, not confined to a handful of technologically dominant states. There is a pressing need for the international community to guard against the risk of this transformative field becoming a new arena for geopolitical rivalry and strategic confrontation. The primary goal should be harnessing AI for the common good of humanity, not for fostering division.

Shanghai Conference: A Forum for International Dialogue

To advance this vision, China will host the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and the High-Level Meeting on AI Global Governance this July in Shanghai. This major gathering is poised to become a pivotal platform for international dialogue and cooperation among governments, industries, and academia. Key objectives include:

  • Fostering discussions on an inclusive, fair, and effective global governance framework for AI;
  • Sharing best practices to ensure the safe and trustworthy development of the technology;
  • Guiding AI innovation to transcend borders and contribute tangibly to the progress and well-being of all people.
China looks forward to working with all parties to steer AI development onto a path that promotes lasting peace and shared prosperity worldwide.
