Qwen Office Assistant Transitions to Paid Model with Tiered Subscriptions
Alibaba's AI application, Qwen, has implemented a significant change to its core "Office Assistant" feature. Information updated on the App Store indicates that the previously free service has now moved to a structured, multi-tier subscription model. This shift requires users to pay for access to certain advanced capabilities.
Subscription Tiers and Pricing Structure
The new membership system is divided into three primary levels:
- Flagship Plan: Priced at 128 CNY per month, or 1499 CNY for an annual subscription.
- Elite Plan: Costs 49 CNY monthly, with a yearly option at 568 CNY.
- Advanced Plan: Available only as an annual subscription for 200 CNY.
In addition to the base subscriptions, specific features like video generation operate on a separate credit-purchase system. Users can buy packs of generation credits ranging from 10 to 500 times, with prices varying from 26 to 968 CNY.
The Path Forward for Free Users
It's important to note that basic access remains available. Earlier in August, Qwen rolled out the Office Assistant and other new features across its app and PC platforms, powered by its latest Qwen3.8-MAX model. All users were initially granted free access.
This introduction of paid plans marks a pivotal step in Alibaba's commercialization strategy for its AI tools. The apparent approach is to maintain free, basic functionality for the general user base while offering power users and professional clients a paid path for higher usage limits, more stable service, and potentially prioritized support.
As of publication, Alibaba has not issued an official public statement regarding the specifics of this pricing strategy or user reactions. The market will be watching closely to see how this model impacts Qwen's user growth and ecosystem development.
