AMD Forges Strategic AI Alliance with Anthropic in Multi-Billion Dollar Deal
The competition for dominance in artificial intelligence computing is intensifying. AMD has entered into a comprehensive partnership with AI research company Anthropic, featuring a strategic investment of up to $5 billion and a landmark long-term chip supply agreement.
Beyond Capital: A Long-Term Compute Pact
This partnership extends far beyond a financial investment. The agreement grants Anthropic access to procure AMD's next-generation Instinct MI450 AI accelerators starting in the first half of 2027, with a total potential compute power of up to 2 gigawatts. This marks AMD's first capital infusion into Anthropic, with the investment tied directly to agreed-upon compute deployment milestones.
"We are committed to being deeply involved in supporting their compute infrastructure build-out," said AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. She added that engineering teams from both companies have already been collaborating on joint development efforts.
Anthropic's Multi-Vendor Strategy and AMD's Foothold
Anthropic currently relies on a diverse suite of chips for its computational needs, including Google's TPUs, Amazon's Trainium, and industry-leading NVIDIA GPUs. The deal with AMD adds a significant new option to its portfolio.
Dr. Su outlined the deployment model: Anthropic will purchase AMD chips for its own data centers while also accessing AMD-based compute power through major cloud providers and new AI-focused cloud services. The companies are already jointly scouting locations for data centers to house these new systems.
