Amp Integrates Claude Subscriptions: A New Option for Efficient Coding

The AI programming tool Amp has rolled out a significant update: full support for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscriptions. Developers can now utilize the Claude Code model directly within Amp's environment without paying additional fees for model usage.

How to Enable Claude Code Mode

To access this feature, users simply need to select "Claude Code" mode when creating a new task and link their Claude account. All model usage will be deducted from their existing Claude subscription limits, with no separate charges from Amp.

Technical Implementation and Preserved Features

The integration is built on the official Claude Agent SDK, ensuring reliable model access. Amp's core functionalities remain fully available:

  • Cloud Development Environment: On-demand programming workstations
  • Collaboration Tools: Team task sharing and progress tracking
  • Agent Orchestration: Configurable multi-step automated workflows

It's important to note that only the Claude Code mode supports using Claude subscription credits. Amp's existing Medium, High, and Ultra model packages are not included in this update.

Pricing and Execution Options

Running Claude Code tasks locally is completely free. However, using Amp's cloud virtual machine resources still incurs standard infrastructure fees. This allows developers to choose the deployment method that best suits their project needs.

Industry Context and Policy Updates

Anthropic's policy regarding third-party tools using Claude subscriptions has seen some changes. Earlier this year, the company considered restricting such integrations but paused those plans in June. The latest confirmation in October indicates third-party applications can continue to utilize Claude subscription credits.

Official documentation still recommends obtaining prior approval from Anthropic if a product plans to offer Claude login or subscription management features, providing a framework for ecosystem partnerships.
