Claude Science Debuts in Global Hackathon: AI Meets Life Sciences Research
On July 3, Anthropic announced the "Built with Claude: Life Sciences" global online hackathon, organized in partnership with San Francisco's Gladstone Institute and Cerebral Valley. Scheduled for July 7–13, the event marks the first major practical application of Anthropic's newly launched Claude Science platform. The hackathon targets researchers, clinicians, bioinformatics experts, and biotech developers, with applications closing on July 5.
Dual Tracks: From Lab Exploration to Tool Development
The hackathon features two parallel tracks designed for different use cases.
Lab Track: Hands-On Research with Real Datasets
Participants will use the Claude Science platform to explore specific biological questions and submit reproducible analysis results or trained models. To support this track, collaborating labs like Gladstone Institute are providing unique real-world datasets, including immune T-cell sequencing data, DNA regulatory activity predictions, and protein interaction networks.
Developer Track: Building Practical Research Tools
The second track invites developers to use Claude Code to create software tools for researchers, clinics, or biotech companies. This offers an opportunity to translate AI capabilities into functional products.
Resources and Incentives
Organizers will select 500 applicants to participate. Each selected participant will receive one-month access to Claude Max 20x and $200 in API credits. Winning teams will share $100,000 worth of API credits and platform usage allowances.
Beyond a competition, this event represents a step toward deeper integration of AI and life sciences. By providing access to real research data and specialized tools, Anthropic aims to drive innovation in biomedical applications and accelerate scientific discovery.
