Anthropic Establishes Public Benefit Fund with Equity Stake

AI company Anthropic has announced the creation of its "Anthropic Public Benefit Fund," a significant commitment that involves dedicating company equity to public good initiatives.

Initial Stake and Growth Mechanism

The fund will receive an initial allocation of 5% of Anthropic's equity. A notable feature is a provision for future growth: for every 50% increase in the company's valuation above a set baseline, the board of directors may elect to contribute an additional stake of up to 2% to the fund.

Structure and Guardrails

To maintain operational flexibility, the fund will be established as a wholly-owned limited liability company rather than a non-profit. Strict guardrails are in place, prohibiting the use of the fund's equity holdings for any form of political lobbying or campaign contributions, both in the United States and internationally.

Broader Commitment: Targeting ~20% of Equity for Public Benefit

This fund is part of a broader structure at Anthropic for channeling equity towards public benefit. The company's co-founders had previously committed to donating 80% of their personal equity. Additionally, an employee donation-matching program sees participation from approximately half of the staff.

Combining these elements, Anthropic projects that roughly 20% of its total equity will ultimately be directed toward public benefit purposes, with the proportion expected to increase further upon reaching specific valuation milestones.

Complementary Funding for Societal Impact Research

Separately, Anthropic has pledged $200 million to research the potential impact of AI on the labor market and develop mitigation strategies. This financial commitment operates in parallel to the equity-based fund, forming a two-pronged approach to addressing the societal implications of advanced AI.
