Apple’s Sales Strategy Evolves: New “Upgrade” Leasing Program Set for Launch

Apple is preparing a significant shift in how customers can acquire its hardware. A new device leasing initiative, reportedly named “Upgrade,” is scheduled to go live on July 28, representing a fresh approach to consumer sales.

Service Overview and How It Works

The program will debut in the United States, available both through Apple’s physical retail stores and its online platform. It is expected to include most iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch models.

At its core, the service functions similarly to a subscription. Instead of an outright purchase, customers make regular payments for the use of the device, introducing a new layer of flexibility to ownership.

Flexible Options for Customers

Throughout the lease term, users will have several paths to choose from:

  • Pay Off Early to Own: Customers can opt to pay the remaining balance ahead of schedule to gain full ownership of the device.
  • Upgrade to a Newer Model Early: Under certain conditions, lessees can trade in their current device for a newer generation. An additional fee may apply for early upgrades.
  • Return the Device at Lease End: Much like auto leasing, users can simply return the hardware when the agreed-upon term concludes.
  • Keep the Device After the Term: Alternatively, customers may choose to retain and continue using the product after the lease period ends.

The standard lease period varies by product category: 24 months for iPhone and Apple Watch, and 36 months for Mac and iPad.

Strategic Partnership and Goals

To facilitate this program, Apple is partnering with fintech firm Klarna Group, which will provide the financing backbone for the leasing operations.

Industry observers see the “Upgrade” program as a strategic move to make Apple’s products more accessible. By lowering the upfront cost barrier and offering a pathway to newer technology, Apple likely aims to attract a broader customer base and stimulate sales volume across its device lineup.
