£22 Billion Fund Goes On-Chain: Aviva Investors Tokenizes Sterling Liquidity Fund
A significant stride has been made in merging traditional finance with digital asset infrastructure. Aviva Investors, the global asset management business of Aviva plc, in collaboration with Ripple, has launched a tokenized share class of its Aviva Investors Sterling (GBP) Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger.
The Scale of the Move
This is not a minor experiment. The fund in question is Aviva Investors' largest, representing approximately £22 billion in assets under management. Its tokenization opens a substantial pool of traditional liquidity to the blockchain ecosystem.
The “Digital Twin” Approach: Innovation Within the Framework
The fund, an Irish-registered UCITS money market fund launched in 2002, maintains its established legal and regulatory structure. The innovation lies in the application of a "digital twin" model.
- Foundation Remains: The original fund's investment objectives, risk profile, liquidity terms, and regulatory protections are entirely preserved.
- New Layer of Access: A blockchain-based access layer is superimposed, where tokenized shares represent ownership interests in the underlying conventional fund shares.
This approach prioritizes regulatory compliance and investor familiarity while introducing the operational efficiencies of distributed ledger technology.
Building a Tokenized Portfolio
This marks the second tokenized fund from Aviva Investors, following the tokenization of its US Dollar Liquidity Fund in July. Combined investment into these two tokenized share classes has already surpassed £86 million, with Aviva committing £50 million of its own capital to the new sterling shares, underscoring strategic confidence.
Institutional-Grade Infrastructure
The issuance is supported by institutional-grade digital asset custodian Komainu and digital infrastructure platform Licuido. The fund's assets are custodied by Bank of New York Mellon, ensuring an end-to-end institutional trust framework from physical assets to on-chain tokens.
This development signals a shift from exploration to implementation by mainstream financial institutions, actively leveraging blockchain to enhance liquidity, accessibility, and operational processes for core investment products.
