ERNIE Assistant Gets a "Task Brain" Upgrade

During a recent Baidu AI Open Day event, a pivotal evolution of one of its flagship products took center stage. The company announced that the core "Task Engine" powering its ERNIE Assistant within the Baidu App has been significantly upgraded to version 2.0.

This move represents more than a routine update. The fundamental breakthrough lies in transforming the AI assistant from a reactive chatbot into a proactive "intelligent task manager" capable of both planning and execution.

Beyond Understanding Queries to Achieving Goals

The new Task Engine 2.0 operates by deeply comprehending a user's end goal and autonomously breaking it down into a sequence of actionable steps.

For instance, if a user states, "I want to plan a family vacation," the assistant no longer merely suggests tourist attractions. It will proactively create a full task plan: recommending destinations based on family preferences, comparing flight and hotel prices, and even drafting a preliminary itinerary and budget.

  • Finance: Can analyze complex investment product reports, extracting key information and comparing risks and returns.
  • Education: Capable of creating personalized study plans for students, tracking progress, and recommending practice materials.
  • Work: Can handle tasks like meeting minute summarization, data report generation, and multi-step information retrieval and synthesis.

This goal-oriented approach significantly lowers the barrier to using AI tools and reduces operational friction for users.

Surge in User Growth and Engagement

The enhanced capabilities are directly reflected in user metrics. According to the latest data released by Baidu, the daily active users (DAU) of ERNIE Assistant saw a substantial 83% year-over-year increase in June.

Perhaps more telling is the change in user engagement depth. The average number of daily conversation turns between users and the assistant more than doubled. This indicates users are increasingly delegating complex, multi-step tasks to the assistant, demonstrating a marked rise in trust and reliance.

Industry observers note that this upgrade represents a critical step for Baidu in moving AI applications from demonstration to practical utility. As the technology shifts from showcasing capabilities to solving real-world problems, its true user value and commercial potential begin to unfold.
