Tech Titans Pivot to Power: Gates' Nuclear Strategy Advances in Korea

As the global tech industry races for AI supremacy, a more fundamental challenge is emerging: electricity. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates' recent itinerary in South Korea highlighted this shift. His meetings with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and HD Hyundai Group Chairman Chung Ki-sun focused not on software, but on deep discussions about next-generation nuclear energy collaboration.

AI Boom Fuels Energy Concerns, Nuclear Emerges as a Solution

The central theme of the talks was unmistakable: securing a stable, massive power supply for the coming AI era. With data centers expanding rapidly worldwide, their energy consumption rivals that of mid-sized cities, putting pressure on traditional power sources both economically and environmentally.

In discussions with Chey Tae-won, Gates explored the unique value of Small Modular Reactors in addressing this demand. SMRs, with their modular design, enhanced safety, and deployment flexibility, are seen as a promising technology to bridge the future power gap. The conversation also touched on potential synergies between U.S. and Korean advanced nuclear supply chains.

Capital and Agreements Pave the Way for Concrete Collaboration

The business groundwork was laid earlier. In 2022, SK Group and its subsidiary SK Innovation invested $250 million in TerraPower, the nuclear venture founded by Gates, becoming its second-largest shareholder. This financial tie provided a foundation for today's technical and market partnerships.

During this visit, SK Innovation and TerraPower signed a business cooperation agreement specifically for sodium-cooled SMRs. This advanced reactor design uses liquid sodium instead of water as a coolant, offering potential advantages in efficiency and safety.

Forging an Industrial Alliance for Commercialization

Gates' agenda extended beyond SK. His meeting with HD Hyundai's Chung Ki-sun and executives from Hyundai Engineering & Construction aimed to propel a broader industrial alliance. In May, the three entities—TerraPower, SK Innovation, and Hyundai E&C—had already agreed to collaborate on commercializing sodium-cooled reactor technology, defining their respective roles.

A key objective of this follow-up meeting was to assess progress and align next steps. Hyundai E&C's expertise in large-scale engineering complements TerraPower's technology and SK's capital and market reach, forming a complete ecosystem from R&D and construction to project financing.

Bill Gates' Korean visit was more than a routine business trip. It signals that leading tech capital and industrial giants are actively redrawing the global energy map.
