Binance Implements Safeguard for ONE Perpetual Contracts Amid Market Turmoil

Recent security incidents affecting the Harmony (ONE) network have triggered abnormal and volatile price movements across multiple spot trading platforms. In response to these atypical market conditions, Binance Futures has enacted a targeted protective measure for its derivatives users.

The Key Measure: How the Latest Price Protection (LPP) Works

Effective from 20:00 (UTC+8) on August 14, Binance activated the Latest Price Protection (LPP) mechanism for its ONE/USDT margined perpetual contract. The primary goal of LPP is to provide a more stable and reliable mark price during periods of spot market dislocation, shielding traders from unnecessary liquidations caused by erratic spot quotes.

While LPP is active, the mark price calculation is temporarily modified:

  • Smoothed Price Calculation: The mark price is derived from a moving average of trades over the preceding 10 seconds, ensuring a gradual transition.
  • Capped Volatility: The mark price is limited to a maximum change of ±1% per second, buffering against instantaneous extreme moves.
  • Sharply Reduced Funding Rate Limits: In tandem, the funding rate上限 and下限 have been tightened significantly from ±2.000% to ±0.005%. This drastically minimizes cost variations for holding positions during the turbulent period.

Implications for Traders and the Path Forward

For users, the immediate effect is a more controlled trading environment. Existing positions and assets are not adversely affected by this adjustment; instead, the mechanism acts as a "firewall" against external market noise. LPP isolates the perpetual contract pricing from spot market anomalies, aiming to reflect a truer, steadier market state.

Binance clarified that LPP is a temporary risk control measure. The protection period will conclude once the spot price for ONE converges across major exchanges and market stability returns. The platform will then revert to the standard mark price calculation method and notify users via an official announcement.

This move demonstrates how exchanges can proactively manage derivative market stability when underlying assets face sudden risks. For traders, understanding the logic and triggers of such safeguards is crucial for effective risk management in complex market environments.
