Bitcoin Consolidates at Highs as Momentum Signals Remain Mixed

Over the past 24 hours, Bitcoin has seen minimal movement, inching up just 0.4% while hovering around the $77,000 level. Although the price demonstrates resilience, data from both the derivatives market and exchange price differentials fail to provide a clear confirmation of strengthening buying interest.

Persistent Selling Pressure in Derivatives

A derivatives pressure index, which incorporates factors like taker pressure, BTC-denominated open interest changes, and funding rates, has remained below zero since September 6th. The index has recently dropped further from -25.36 to -60.80, indicating that seller sentiment continues to dominate the market. It's worth noting that this metric cannot distinguish whether the pressure stems from new short positions or the closing of long positions.

Coinbase Discount Persists

Another key metric under scrutiny is the price difference between Coinbase and Binance. Since the evening of September 6th, Bitcoin prices on Coinbase have consistently traded at a discount compared to Binance. The latest discount stands at -0.0455%. More significantly, the 48-hour average discount is -0.0323%, with the trend worsening over the past day, suggesting this weakness is not a fleeting, hourly anomaly.

Market Outlook and Critical Levels to Watch

Given these indicators, the near-term market outlook leans toward caution. While price support has held, buyers have not gained the upper hand. For a confirmed shift toward a more positive trend, two conditions need to be met:

  • The derivatives pressure index must stabilize and move back above the zero line.
  • The 48-hour average of Coinbase's premium over Binance must turn positive.
The primary risk at present is that if the current negative pressure persists, it could trigger another price decline.
