MARA's Texas Data Center Project Gains Momentum with Major Financial Move

In a significant step toward developing a major data center hub, Bitcoin mining firm MARA has secured its power supply for a Texas project by posting a substantial $100 million deposit. This move, reported by industry sources, solidifies the company's commitment to a large-scale campus in Matagorda County.

Project Scale and Strategic Vision

The planned facility, located southwest of Houston, encompasses a vast site of over 1,200 acres. Its defining feature is the immense planned power capacity of up to 2 gigawatts (GW). This level of energy allocation is designed to support a dual-purpose operation.

MARA intends the campus to host not only Bitcoin mining operations but also infrastructure for high-performance computing (HPC) applications. This diversified approach aligns with a broader industry shift where mining companies are expanding their service offerings to improve asset utility.

Revised Agreement and Financial Structure

Concurrent with the deposit announcement, MARA disclosed revisions to its agreement with sustainable fuels developer HIF USA. The changes focus on payment terms and conditions:

  • Streamlined Payments: Certain payments originally tied to regulatory approvals have been restructured into a clearer two-phase schedule. This modification may facilitate smoother capital deployment by reducing dependency on complex approval timelines.
  • Preserved Cost Cap Despite the adjusted payment flow, the agreement maintains a total project acquisition cost ceiling of $6 billion, providing a definitive financial framework for the development.

These adjustments reflect a strategic approach to managing the financial execution of a large-scale, capital-intensive project.

Texas: A Focal Point for Digital Infrastructure

MARA's major investment in Texas highlights the state's growing prominence in the digital asset infrastructure sector. The favorable regulatory climate, competitive energy market, and mix of power generation sources continue to attract significant investment from mining and data center companies.

The posting of a nine-figure power deposit is a common mechanism to secure long-term, high-volume electricity contracts in such markets—a critical requirement for the economics of energy-intensive operations. This action reinforces MARA's position as a leading player in the North American compute infrastructure landscape.

With the power deposit secured and the commercial terms finalized, the path is now clearer for the development of this 2GW facility, whose progress will be closely watched by the industry.
