The Vanishing Act: Bitcoin Premium Disappears as Corporate Valuations Slump
A significant warning signal emerged in capital markets on June 27. Strategy, the company famous for its heavy bitcoin allocations, saw the market premium for its bitcoin holdings temporarily evaporate. A key metric, the enterprise mNAV (ratio of enterprise value to the market value of bitcoin holdings), fell below the critical psychological level of 1.0, hitting a low of approximately 0.98.
The drop below 1 is symbolically powerful. It indicates that investors currently value the entire Strategy company at less than the current market value of the bitcoin reserves on its balance sheet. In essence, the market is pricing the company's core business, brand, team, and all other assets as having negative combined value.
Shares Tumble Across the Board, STRC Sets Record Low
Market pessimism was reflected directly in share prices. Strategy's common stock fell to a low of $82.16 during Friday's session, dipping further to $81.80 in after-hours trading. The movement was even more pronounced for its preferred shares, STRC, which plunged to $71.40 intraday—setting a new all-time low since the stock began trading. This price represents a steep discount of roughly 26% from its $100 par value.
Cash Flow Strains and a Sector-Wide Valuation Reset
Analysts point to cash flow pressures as a primary concern. Strategy carries an annual preferred dividend obligation of about $1.2 billion, which steadily drains its cash reserves. These reserves have now declined to around $1.4 billion. With bitcoin prices failing to provide sustained, unrealized gains, the high fixed payout is eroding market confidence.
This appears to be a sector-wide trend, not an isolated incident. Other publicly traded companies with significant bitcoin holdings saw similar declines in their enterprise mNAV around the same time. Metaplanet and Nakamoto saw their ratios fall to around 0.9 and 0.92, respectively. Within the sector, only Strive maintained a premium level at 1.24, showing relative resilience. All this occurred while the bitcoin price oscillated around $59,560, failing to offer strong price support for holders.
The Market Re-evaluates "Bitcoin Equities"
This data points to a deeper trend: the market is reassessing publicly listed companies that hold bitcoin as a core asset. As the euphoria from the bull market fades, investors are scrutinizing the fundamentals and sustainable operations of these firms more冷静ly. The combination of high leverage, substantial dividend commitments, and volatile crypto assets significantly amplifies risk during bear or sideways markets.
An enterprise mNAV falling below 1 could become a key bellwether. It suggests that the "bitcoin reserve" card is no longer sufficient, in the current environment, to support a company's overall valuation. Investors are demanding clearer paths to profitability, more robust financial structures, or stronger conviction in bitcoin's future price appreciation. For Strategy and its peers, balancing faith in crypto assets with the practical responsibilities of a public company to shareholders will be the defining challenge of the next phase.
