Exchange CEO's Public Ultimatum Puts Cross-Chain Protocol in Ethical Spotlight

Gracy Chen, CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Bitget, recently issued a strongly-worded statement on social media platform X. She revealed that addresses associated with a prior attacker have been publicly listed and are under active tracking. Furthermore, Bitget has formally requested that the cross-chain protocol THORChain deny all swapping and bridging services to these flagged addresses.

The “Decentralization” Shield Faces Scrutiny

In her statement, Chen tackled a recurring debate within the crypto industry head-on. She emphasized that while decentralization is a core design principle, it must not be used as a “shield” to facilitate the movement of funds known to be stolen and publicly identified. Ending with the phrase “the entire industry is watching,” she elevated the incident to a matter of industry norms and ethical accountability.

This direct challenge highlights the perennial dilemma for decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols: balancing the commitment to permissionless, censorship-resistant technology with fundamental social and legal responsibilities in combating illicit fund flows.

Security Firm's Findings Fuel the Fire

The public call-out was preceded by a report from blockchain security analytics firm MistTrack. Their monitoring indicated that following the Bitget security incident, funds linked to the attacker were consistently funneled into the THORChain protocol.

Within THORChain, these funds were swapped and bridged across different blockchains. MistTrack's report openly questioned the protocol's responsibility: when a protocol is aware that the substantial funds it is processing originate from a major, industry-identified hack, should it not bear some duty beyond mere transaction execution?

  • Core Conflict: A fundamental clash exists between DeFi's “code is law” ethos and the real-world need to combat illegal activity.
  • Industry Ramifications: Such incidents may invite deeper regulatory scrutiny of cross-chain protocols, increasing compliance pressures.
  • User Trust: Raises new questions among everyday users about the security and ethical boundaries of “neutral” DeFi protocols.

As of now, THORChain has not issued a public response. The outcome of this situation is poised to become a critical test case for how the DeFi ecosystem handles the aftermath of major security breaches.
