Incident Overview

During a reward distribution process, South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb mistakenly issued 620,000 Bitcoin instead of 620,000 won in rewards, resulting in an error involving assets worth 60 trillion won.

Loss and Recovery Progress

Although the exchange quickly recovered 99.7% of the assets, 125 Bitcoin remain unrecovered, valued at approximately 13 billion won.

User Cash-Out Status

Over 80 users have already cashed out the mistakenly received funds, with about 3 billion won transferred to personal bank accounts and another 10 billion won used to purchase other cryptocurrencies.

Exchange Response

Bithumb is actively communicating with affected users to request the return of funds. For users impacted by market fluctuations, the exchange has pledged to fully compensate for price differences and provide an additional 10% compensation, along with a one-week waiver of trading fees.

Regulatory Intervention

The incident has prompted South Korea's financial regulator to announce a comprehensive review of internal controls and asset verification systems across all cryptocurrency exchanges.
