Unlocking Instant Liquidity for Fund Assets

At the recent Token2049 conference in Singapore, Nikhil Sharma, Digital Assets Lead at global investment giant BlackRock, highlighted a significant shift in how tokenized money market funds can be utilized.

Collateral Transfer: Bypassing the Redemption Queue

The fundamental change lies in the operational workflow. Traditionally, using fund assets as collateral requires investors to first redeem their shares, wait for cash settlement—often taking several days—and then deploy that cash.

Tokenization disrupts this model. Sharma pointed out that tokenized fund shares can be directly recognized and transferred as eligible collateral. This translates to:

  • Eliminating redemption steps: Assets don't need to be converted to cash first.
  • Enabling instant utility: Collateral transfer can occur near-instantly on-chain.
  • Unlocking dual utility: Shares continue earning yield while simultaneously serving a financial function.

Implications for Financial Infrastructure

Widespread adoption of this capability could reshape financial infrastructure. It's not merely a tech upgrade but a redefinition of asset “liquidity” and “usability.” Fund assets would evolve from relatively static savings vehicles into active financial components that can be deployed immediately across lending, derivatives, and settlement scenarios.

While scaling this model requires navigating regulatory, standardization, and security challenges, such insights from industry leaders clearly chart a path toward more efficient and functional applications for tokenized real-world assets (RWA).
