Blockchain.com Targets Public Listing with $500 Million IPO Plan
Cryptocurrency exchange and wallet service provider Blockchain.com is preparing for an initial public offering, according to people familiar with the matter. The company aims to raise approximately $500 million, seeking a valuation between $4 billion and $6 billion.
Adjusted Valuation and Flexible Approach
This target range represents a notable adjustment from the company's peak valuation of $14 billion during the previous crypto market cycle. Insiders indicate the firm remains flexible on offering size and would consider a smaller issuance if market conditions warrant.
The groundwork was laid earlier this year when Blockchain.com confidentially submitted a draft registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in May. Details regarding share count and pricing were not disclosed at that time.
Timing Amid Market Recovery and Challenges
The potential listing emerges as cryptocurrency markets show signs of renewed momentum. Bitcoin has gained more than 30% since mid-August, contributing to broader sector optimism and potentially reopening capital markets access for crypto businesses.
However, recent history offers cautionary notes. Newly public crypto-adjacent companies including Gemini, BitGo, and eToro have seen their shares decline significantly from post-listing highs, with drops ranging from 50% to 80%. This performance highlights the persistent challenges even as market conditions improve.
- Fundraising Target: ~$500 million
- Valuation Range: $4-6 billion
- Previous Peak: $14 billion valuation
- Market Context: Bitcoin up >30% since August lows
- Recent Precedent: Peer stocks down 50-80% from highs
Blockchain.com's IPO attempt will serve as a key test of traditional market appetite for cryptocurrency infrastructure providers. Its ultimate valuation and reception could influence financing prospects for other companies across the digital asset ecosystem.
