China's Gold Market H1 2026: Supply Constraints and Evolving Demand

Data released by the China Gold Association reveals a contrasting picture for the first half of 2026: a noticeable contraction in domestic gold production alongside subtle growth in consumption, marked by significant internal shifts in demand patterns. Total gold production reached 229.988 tonnes, a decrease of 22.773 tonnes or 9.01% compared to the same period last year.

Domestic Production Declines, Imported Supply Offers Limited Relief

The overall drop was primarily driven by a sharp fall in domestically sourced gold output. Production from local mines stood at 152.908 tonnes, down 26.175 tonnes or 14.62% year-on-year. This decline could be attributed to factors such as ore grade, stricter environmental policies, and enhanced safety regulations.

Gold produced from imported materials provided some offset, increasing by 4.62% to 77.080 tonnes. However, this gain was insufficient to counterbalance the steep domestic slump, resulting in a net reduction in total supply.

Consumption Holds Steady, Powered by Surging Investment Demand

In contrast to the supply side, gold consumption saw modest growth, rising 1.23% to 511.412 tonnes. The more striking story lies within the consumption breakdown.

Gold jewelry demand cooled significantly, plummeting 33.88% to 132.133 tonnes. This likely indicates consumer caution regarding high-value, discretionary purchases amid elevated gold prices.

Conversely, investment demand for gold bars and coins was exceptionally robust, soaring 28.42% to 339.336 tonnes. This segment became the primary engine for overall consumption growth, underscoring gold's strong appeal as a safe-haven asset and store of value for domestic investors in an uncertain environment.

Industrial and other uses consumed 39.943 tonnes, a slight decrease of 2.90%, remaining relatively stable.

Market Implications: A Shift from Ornament to Asset

The H1 2026 figures highlight a pivotal transition within China's gold market. The supply contraction underscores the importance of securing domestic resource stability. On the demand side, the market's driving force is rapidly shifting from traditional jewelry consumption towards investment and preservation of wealth.

This divergent demand landscape is not only a direct response to gold price movements but may also signal changing public expectations regarding economic prospects, currency values, and asset allocation. The investment attribute of gold is currently commanding greater emphasis from the market.
