South Korean Broker Issues Fresh Warning, Slashing Chip Giant's Target
On July 29th, as the KOSPI index closed at 5,663 points, shares of memory chip leader SK Hynix ended at 1.401 million won. On the same day, domestic broker BNK Investment & Securities released an impactful research report, sharply cutting its target price for SK Hynix from 1.85 million to 1.48 million won.
This is not BNK's first timely caution. Back on July 8th, when the KOSPI was near 7,700 points and SK Hynix traded around 2.329 million won, the broker lowered its target to 1.85 million won. That move was later seen as a prescient signal preceding a significant market pullback. Consequently, its latest reduction is again being scrutinized by investors as a critical market indicator.
In the South Korean equity research landscape, brokers rarely issue explicit "Sell" ratings. Therefore, a substantial target price cut is widely interpreted by the market as a de facto "Sell" or strong "Caution" recommendation, carrying significant weight.
Deep Dive: The Bearish Thesis
BNK's report elaborates on three core arguments underpinning its cautious near-term outlook for SK Hynix.
Earnings Misses Pile Up
The report first highlights that SK Hynix has delivered earnings below market expectations for two consecutive quarters. This directly points to operational headwinds and provides a fundamental basis for the stock's weakness.
Structural Industry Headwinds: Slowing Demand Meets Capacity Race
The analysis spotlights a central paradox in the current semiconductor cycle:
- Peaking Demand Momentum: Global demand growth, particularly from consumer electronics, is decelerating markedly.
- Aggressive Capacity Expansion Continues: Despite weaker demand signals, major chipmakers, banking on long-term optimism, are pushing ahead with massive new fab and expansion plans. This "counter-cyclical" investment behavior has sharply heightened fears of a potential supply glut down the road.
This mismatch between supply and demand expectations forms the core pressure on industry valuations.
Evolving Competitive Landscape: New Entrant Adds Pressure
The report specifically notes the successful IPO of Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), coinciding with a potential peak in China's semiconductor cycle. From a competitive standpoint, this not only adds future capacity but also suggests intensifying competition, posing a potential threat to the pricing power and market share of incumbents like SK Hynix.
Market Outlook: Oversold, But Limited Rebound Potential
BNK acknowledges that, reflecting these negatives, SK Hynix's share price has fallen to the lower end of its valuation range and is technically oversold in the near term.
However, the broker remains skeptical about the sustainability of any rebound. The report argues that the competitive capacity expansion stance among players is unlikely to reverse soon, coupled with an expected continuation of the demand slowdown into the second half of the year. Therefore, any technical bounce in the stock price is likely to have limited upside.
Weighing these factors, BNK Investment & Securities maintained its "Hold" rating on SK Hynix but lowered the target price by 20% to 1.48 million won (based on a 2026E P/B of 3.1x). This adjustment clearly communicates its conservative view on the company's near-term prospects.
