Base App Pivots to Trading with Perpetual Contracts Integration

Coinbase has significantly expanded the capabilities of its Base App, its flagship Layer 2 ecosystem application. Users can now trade cryptocurrency perpetual contracts directly within the app. Powered by the decentralized derivatives protocol Hyperliquid, the service offers access to over 290 markets, including major assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as markets tied to equities and commodities.

High Leverage and Associated Risks

The most notable feature is the leverage offered, which can reach up to 50x depending on the asset. This amplifies both potential gains and risks. Chintan Turakhia, an engineering lead at Coinbase, noted that positions are subject to liquidation if losses exceed a certain threshold, with maximum leverage varying by asset.

The product launch comes with geographic restrictions. It is not available to users in jurisdictions with strict regulations on leveraged crypto derivatives, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Coinbase stated this is to ensure compliance with local laws.

User Experience and Technical Execution

The trading experience is designed to be seamless. Users can place and manage orders entirely within the Base App interface without needing to switch wallets or applications. However, the actual order matching and settlement are handled on the backend by the Hyperliquid protocol. This model aims to balance user-friendly integration with decentralized execution.

A Strategic Shift in Product Focus

This integration signals a strategic shift for Base App. Initially promoted as a hub for social and creator-focused features, the platform is now prioritizing core financial utilities. Base founder Jesse Pollak previously acknowledged that social and creator tokens failed to drive expected user growth.

Market data shows perpetual contracts account for roughly 75% of all crypto trading volume, a feature highly requested by Base's active users. Consequently, Base's roadmap is now clearly oriented towards trading, payments, and AI Agent functionalities. Predictive markets, perpetual contracts, and stablecoins are emerging as the new drivers for adoption, moving beyond the platform's original social narrative.
