Coinbase Broadens Derivatives Menu with DRAM and SOXL Perps

Coinbase International Exchange is adding two new perpetual futures contracts to its trading roster. Starting from 5:00 PM UTC+8 on July 16th, traders will gain access to DRAM-PERP and SOXL-PERP, derivatives linked to popular thematic ETFs.

What Are the New Contracts Tracking?

The new listings represent a bridge between crypto trading and traditional equity themes. The DRAM contract is based on the Roundhill Memory ETF, which offers exposure to companies across the DRAM supply chain. The SOXL contract tracks the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares ETF, a leveraged product designed to deliver three times the daily performance of a semiconductor index.

By offering these as perpetual futures, the exchange enables speculation on the price direction of these specialized tech sectors without owning the underlying securities. This opens up strategies for traders familiar with semiconductor and memory market dynamics to apply leverage and trade around the clock within a crypto-native format.

Strategic Move in a Competitive Landscape

This launch continues Coinbase's push to diversify its derivatives offerings beyond plain-vanilla crypto assets. The platform has been systematically introducing contracts tied to major indices and equities over recent months.

Market analysts see several implications:

  • Audience Expansion: It could attract traditional finance traders with expertise in tech sectors who are new to crypto exchanges.
  • Portfolio Utility: Provides a potential hedging instrument for investors holding physical semiconductor or memory stocks.
  • Product Differentiation: In a crowded derivatives market, continuously adding unique assets is key to maintaining user engagement and liquidity.

For participants, it's crucial to understand the specifics of the underlying ETFs, especially the daily reset mechanism of the leveraged SOXL product, which can lead to compounding effects different from standard holdings. The exchange noted that trading will begin at the stated time "or thereafter," allowing for minor operational adjustments.
