Card Issuer's Sudden Exit Disrupts Crypto Payment Landscape
The sudden collapse of a key infrastructure provider has delivered a sharp blow to the crypto sector's integration with mainstream payments. This week, users of several prominent cryptocurrency wallets found their linked card services inoperable, tracing the root cause to their shared card issuer, Kulipa.
Unplanned Service Halt Leaves Platforms Scrambling
Self-custody wallet Ready (formerly Argent) was among the first to confirm the disruption. Co-founder Itamar Lesuisse stated on social media that the platform received no advance warning before learning its issuing partner, Kulipa, had shut down, forcing an immediate termination of its crypto card program. Ready announced it would process automatic refunds for eligible card subscriptions.
The fallout extended beyond Ready. The popular Solana wallet Solflare also reported its card service had ceased functioning. Both cards operated on a similar design: funds were pulled directly from the user's connected wallet at the moment of purchase. This mechanism meant Kulipa never held customer balances, so user crypto assets were not at risk during the issuer's failure.
Widespread Impact Highlights Infrastructure Fragility
The incident exposes a critical vulnerability in crypto payments: reliance on centralized service providers. Reports indicate Kulipa served approximately 20 crypto wallet and fintech clients, building card programs for them. Its abrupt closure instantly severed a vital payment rail, suggesting the impact could be broader than currently known.
Adding to the surprise, Kulipa had just completed a $6.2 million seed funding round co-led by Flourish Ventures and 1kx a mere four months prior. The short span between securing fresh capital and shutting down raises significant questions about the circumstances behind its failure and prompts scrutiny into the sustainability of such ventures.
Self-Custody Proves Its Merit, But User Experience Suffers
This event underscores a key advantage of the self-custody model. Because users retain control of their assets—instead of depositing them with the card issuer or a centralized platform—their capital remains secure even if an intermediary fails. This contrasts with scenarios involving traditional banks or certain centralized exchanges.
Nevertheless, the unexpected loss of payment functionality damages user experience. For those who adopted these crypto cards for daily spending, such instability may erode confidence in these innovative payment tools.
