Acquisition Talks Highlight Sharp Valuation Decline for Crypto Custodian
Copper, a once high-flying cryptocurrency custody provider, is now in discussions with potential acquirers, but the numbers on the table tell a story of dramatically changed fortunes.
A Steep Drop from Peak Valuation
Preliminary acquisition offers currently circulating are in the region of $200 million, according to people familiar with the matter. This figure stands in stark contrast to the approximately $500 million valuation target set by investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald during a sale process initiated earlier this year.
The company's journey has been a rollercoaster. At the height of the 2021 crypto bull market, Copper achieved a valuation of $2.5 billion. Over its lifetime, it successfully raised more than $300 million in funding from prominent backers.
Pivot to a New Core Business
Facing shifting market dynamics, Copper executed a significant strategic pivot in 2023. The company shut down its enterprise-focused digital asset custody business to concentrate fully on ClearLoop, its institutional settlement network.
This move repositioned Copper from a pure custody player to an infrastructure builder focused on transactional efficiency for institutional clients. However, this refined focus has not, so far, translated into the desired valuation premium in the acquisition market.
The gap between the offers and the initial target underscores the market's recalibration of value for crypto services firms post-downturn and strategic shift. Whether a deal materializes will hinge on bridging the perception gap regarding Copper's future potential.
