Crypto PACs Make Major Play in Michigan Primary with $986K Investment
Federal Election Commission filings have unveiled a significant political maneuver funded by cryptocurrency industry interests. In the lead-up to Michigan's August 4 Democratic primary, the Protect Progress PAC, aligned with the sector, deployed over $986,000 in a concentrated effort to bolster incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar and undermine his challenger, Donavan McKinney, in the state's 13th Congressional District.
Strategic Timing and Targeted Spending
The substantial expenditure arrived just two weeks before the primary, a contest that will determine the Democratic nominee for the November general election. The funds were directed toward advertising and voter outreach supporting Thanedar, alongside efforts to disseminate negative messaging about McKinney.
This investment follows a previous successful bet on Thanedar. In 2024, Protect Progress PAC spent approximately $1 million aiding his campaign, which resulted in a primary victory with 54.9% of the vote and a decisive 68.6% win in the November election. The latest financial push aims to secure a repeat performance.
A Formidable Financial War Chest
Protect Progress PAC operates within the broader Fairshake network. Affiliated groups have reported a combined war chest of $191 million earmarked for influencing pivotal races throughout the 2024 election cycle, signaling the industry's serious commitment to political engagement.
This activity is part of a wider trend. Other political action committees backed by digital asset firms are also active, including:
- Fellowship PAC: Supported by a mix of traditional finance and digital asset companies.
- Blockchain Leadership Fund: Funded by several prominent blockchain technology firms.
Expanding the Political Footprint Nationally
The Michigan spending is just one piece of a national strategy. The same FEC filings show Protect Progress PAC has made other strategic investments:
In Arizona, the committee spent over $100,000 to support the re-election campaign of incumbent Representative Greg Stanton. Separately, the Defend American Jobs PAC invested more than $65,000 to aid Republican candidate Amanda McKinney in Washington's 4th Congressional District.
These dispersed investments across states and party lines reveal a calculated approach. Cryptocurrency-aligned groups are working to cultivate broad political influence at the federal level, ensuring their policy priorities find support in future legislative debates.
