Prediction Markets See Record $2.7B Weekly Crypto Volume
In a significant surge of activity, cryptocurrency-related contracts on major prediction market platforms achieved a record-breaking $2.7 billion in weekly nominal trading volume in mid-October. This milestone firmly establishes crypto as the second-largest trading category on these platforms, trailing only sports.
The figure highlights a notable shift in how traders are engaging with digital assets in the current market environment.
Ultra-Short-Term Bitcoin Contracts Drive Momentum
The explosive growth was primarily fueled by high-frequency, ultra-short-duration products, rather than traditional long-term investment contracts. A Bitcoin 15-minute price up/down contract emerged as the dominant force.
On one platform, Bitcoin contracts alone accounted for over $2 billion of the weekly volume. A similar 15-minute Bitcoin contract launched on another platform’s US market saw approximately $92 to $101 million in volume during its first week.
Platforms Hit New Highs
This surge was part of a broader trend. Throughout October, overall platform activity reached new peaks. For the week of October 5-11, total weekly volume across all contract categories hit $19.03 billion, with daily volumes consistently ranging between $3.9 and $4.4 billion.
A Shift in Trading Behavior
The record volume contrasts with a relative slowdown in spot crypto trading on traditional exchanges. This divergence has prompted some exchanges to explore prediction markets as a new avenue for user engagement and growth.
More fundamentally, the $2.7 billion weekly volume underscores a clear trend: traders are pivoting from a “buy-and-hold” approach towards using micro-duration contracts to capitalize on minute-to-minute price volatility. This focus on exploiting tiny market movements is reshaping capital flows and risk appetite within the crypto space.
