Trading Activity Hits a Wall: Volumes at Multi-Year Lows

A recent analysis from a leading research firm paints a sobering picture of the cryptocurrency market: trading activity has slumped to its lowest level since 2022. The total market capitalization currently stands at approximately $2.3 trillion, having declined 1.7% over the past week. More critically, the average weekly trading volume has plummeted to $90 billion, a sharp 7% drop below the historical mean, pointing clearly to a contraction in liquidity.

Flagship Assets Lose Momentum: BTC and ETH Volumes Dip

The market leaders are not immune to this chill. Bitcoin's weekly trading volume reached $38.2 billion, sitting 5% below its average. Ethereum's situation appears more pronounced, with a weekly volume of just $18.3 billion—significantly under its mean, marking an 18% decline. This cooling of trading interest in core assets often signals a market entering a consolidation or wait-and-see phase.

On-Chain Metrics Confirm the Slowdown

Beyond trading volumes, network fees, which reflect actual blockchain usage, have also fallen to depressed levels. Transaction costs on the Ethereum network are currently extremely low, hovering around just 17% of their historical peak. Such inexpensive network usage costs directly indicate scarce on-chain transaction and smart contract interaction activity, further corroborating the overall lack of market vibrancy.

Derivatives Data Hints at Cautious Sentiment

In the futures market, the data presents a mixed picture. Funding rates for both Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen minor upticks but remain at relatively low historical percentiles over the past year, suggesting leveraged long sentiment in perpetual markets is not exuberant. Concurrently, total open interest for both assets' futures saw modest increases, adding a combined $200 million. This combination of "subdued funding rates with slightly rising open interest" may indicate market participants are positioning themselves cautiously rather than making aggressive directional bets.
