A Surge in Cryptocurrency Kidnappings Hits France
The French Organized Crime Prosecution Office recently released alarming statistics. Since 2023, the number of kidnapping or attempted kidnapping cases linked to cryptocurrency within the country has reached a staggering 135.
Case Details and Individuals Involved
Among the 12 cases currently under intensive investigation by the prosecution office, 88 individuals have been formally charged. Significantly, the accused include more than 10 minors, and approximately 75 people are already detained pending trial.
Evolving Crime Trends and Judicial Response
Prosecutors noted that the sharp increase in cases results from judicial authorities consolidating previously scattered incidents. This strategy aims to combat the rapidly evolving nature of crimes associated with crypto assets. Data shows such cases numbered 18 in 2024, surged to 67 in 2025, and have already reached 47 so far in 2026.
Crypto Adoption and a New Crime Pattern
The report underscores that this crime wave is closely tied to the growing use of crypto assets in France and globally. It has emerged as a significant new method for organized criminal groups, posing fresh threats to public security.
