The Mega-Deal: A $7 Billion Partnership Forged
In a significant move for the semiconductor industry, China's leading DRAM manufacturer, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), has secured a massive supply agreement with ByteDance, according to a Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter. The five-year deal, valued at over $7 billion, underscores deepening ties between a major tech consumer and a domestic chipmaker.
Capacity Crunch: Rapid Expansion Underway
This landmark deal arrives as CXMT faces intense pressure on its production capacity, driven by robust domestic demand. To address this bottleneck, the company is pushing forward with the construction of two new fabrication plants, located in Shanghai and Hefei, Anhui province.
These expansion projects are critical. Upon completion, they are expected to double CXMT's total manufacturing capacity to more than 600,000 wafers per month. One source indicated that if the expansion proceeds as planned, CXMT could surpass U.S. rival Micron Technology in production capacity by 2030.
The Ascent: From Domestic Leader to Global Contender
Data from research firm Omdia positions CXMT as the world's fourth-largest DRAM supplier by sales in Q4 2025, with a 7.67% global market share. The company firmly holds the top spot within China.
CXMT has evolved into China's largest and most technologically advanced integrated DRAM device manufacturer (IDM), with a comprehensive layout across the supply chain. Its trajectory highlights the rapid progress of China's self-sufficiency drive in high-end memory chips.
Looking Ahead: Projected Growth in Revenue and Share
Industry outlook remains bullish. Analysis from SemiAnalysis in June projected that CXMT's annual revenue could exceed $50 billion by 2026. Its global market share is forecast to grow steadily from 9% in 2025 to 12% by 2027.
The ByteDance deal provides CXMT not only with substantial, stable orders but also sends a powerful market signal. It demonstrates how China's core tech giants are increasingly aligning their supply chains with top domestic manufacturers, fostering a more resilient and competitive semiconductor ecosystem. The landscape of the global DRAM market may be on the cusp of a new shift.
