Deribit Shuts Down Public Proof of Reserves: A Pivot in Transparency

Cryptocurrency derivatives exchange Deribit has confirmed the removal of its public Proof of Reserves (PoR) page, effective September 1. This move eliminates a tool that allowed users to independently verify the platform's client asset holdings against its liabilities on a daily basis.

The Catalyst for Change

This decision follows a significant operational shift: Deribit's recent integration with Coinbase's institutional custody services. Reports indicate that approximately 90% of client assets are now held under this custodial arrangement.

Integrating with a regulated, third-party custodian alters the fundamental structure of asset safeguarding. When a majority of assets are held by a separate, established entity, the need for and format of a self-reported, daily reserve proof mechanism naturally evolves.

From Self-Reporting to Third-Party Verification

The now-retired PoR page was considered a hallmark of transparency, enabling real-time verification and fostering user trust.

The new model of asset validation will rely on a different framework:

  • Custodial Attestations: Primary reliance shifts to the audit reports and compliance standards of Coinbase Custody itself.
  • Periodic Regulatory Audits: Deribit states that independent financial and regulatory audits will continue as usual.
  • Reduced User-Led Verification: The ability for users to perform on-demand, daily checks is removed. Information will come from periodic audit releases.

Deribit frames this shift as an alignment with more mature, traditional finance-aligned practices for asset security. However, the exchange has not yet announced a replacement public dashboard for displaying audit results, leaving a question about how future verification data will be communicated to the public.

What This Means for Traders

The immediate impact is practical: after September 1, the direct verification link will be gone. The trust model transitions from user-led verification to reliance on institutional audits and brand reputation.

While custody with a top-tier provider may enhance security, it reduces the immediacy and user autonomy of transparency. The market will watch how Deribit manages ongoing communication regarding its audit status and asset health to maintain community trust under this new model.
