First Look: The Dutch Domestic Crypto Asset Landscape
The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) has released its inaugural statistical report detailing crypto asset holdings within its regulated domestic ecosystem. The data shows that as of the end of June 2026, Dutch households collectively held approximately €3.2 billion (roughly $3.58 billion) in crypto assets through service providers registered in the Netherlands. This sum represents about 1.4% of the total value of stocks, bonds, and investment funds held by Dutch families, marking a measurable allocation within mainstream investment portfolios.
Portfolio Composition: Bitcoin's Commanding Lead
Bitcoin dominates the holdings, with an estimated value of €1.5 billion (about $1.68 billion). This constitutes nearly 47% of the total €3.2 billion, meaning that for every two euros held in crypto via these channels, almost one euro is invested in Bitcoin.
Ethereum follows as a distant second, with holdings valued around €300 million (approximately $340 million), accounting for 9.4% of the total. Notably, stablecoins represent less than 1% of the holdings, indicating that Dutch investors using regulated channels primarily hold volatile mainstream assets rather than transaction-focused stablecoins.
The Scope of Data: A Regulated Snapshot
The report clearly defines the limits of its findings. The statistics exclusively cover assets held through Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) registered and supervised within the Netherlands.
- Excluded Assets: Holdings on overseas trading platforms, decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, or in personal self-custody wallets (e.g., hardware or software wallets) are not included.
- Excluded Investments: Indirect exposure to crypto through traditional financial instruments like ETFs, trusts, or listed company stocks is also excluded.
Consequently, DNB emphasizes that the total of €3.4 billion (which includes €200 million held by businesses) does not represent the entirety of crypto wealth owned by Dutch residents and entities. It is best understood as a snapshot of the "transparent segment" within the regulatory perimeter.
Market Implications: The Value of Regulated Gateways
This report's significance lies in its quantification of capital entering the crypto market via regulated, domestic on-ramps. For policymakers, it establishes a crucial baseline for assessing regulatory impact and market risks. For the industry, it demonstrates the sustained appeal of major crypto assets, particularly Bitcoin, even within a strictly regulated market like the Netherlands.
As the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation comes into full effect, data on assets held through compliant service providers will grow increasingly vital, serving as a key metric for gauging the maturity of Europe's crypto economy.
