The End of Unity: Ethereum and Base Diverge on Account Abstraction

Efforts to establish a unified account abstraction standard for the Ethereum ecosystem have officially come to a halt. Core developer Derek Chiang confirmed that collaboration around proposals like EIP-8130 (Frame Transactions) and EIP-8141 ended last week. This means Ethereum mainnet (L1) and Layer 2 networks, led by Base, will now pursue their own distinct technical paths.

The Core Divide: Diverging Priorities of L1 vs. L2

The split stems from fundamentally different priorities.

For Ethereum L1, its role as the foundational settlement layer mandates a focus on censorship resistance, security, user privacy, and future-proofing against quantum computing. Its proposed standards, such as ERC-4337, EIP-7701, and EIP-8141, emphasize features like signature aggregation, advanced privacy protocols, and highly programmable account logic—cornerstones of a decentralized network.

The L2 Pragmatic Path: Scale, Customization, Compliance

For Layer 2s like Base, the primary goals are massive scalability, cost reduction, and deep customization for specific use cases. Compliance with evolving regulatory landscapes is also a significant consideration. Hence, standards like EIP-8130 from the L2 camp seek protocol-level ability to identify or even restrict certain account or transaction types, creating a subtle but critical philosophical clash with L1's permissionless ideals.

A Schism Finalized: Who Bears the Integration Burden?

Despite exploring multiple technical compromises, each potential solution required at least one side to concede on a core objective. No middle ground proved acceptable.

The immediate consequence is that the complexity and cost of integrating disparate standards shifts from the protocol layer to the application layer. Wallet developers and DApp teams may need to support multiple account abstraction frameworks to ensure seamless user experiences across L1 and various L2s.

Two Paths Forward: Coordination or Acceptance?

The community now faces two broad options.

  • Broader EVM Coordination: Attempt to create a new coordination framework involving more L1 and L2 participants—a challenging prospect given the public divergence of interests.
  • Abstracting Complexity at the Application Layer: A more pragmatic path may be to accept the fragmentation and let smarter wallets and application programming interfaces (APIs) "hide" the underlying complexity, presenting a unified interface to end-users.

Many are leaning toward the latter. Instead of chasing an elusive universal protocol, the market and application innovation might provide the solution. Wallets and infrastructure providers could become the new critical layer, integrating fragmented standards to deliver simplicity. The battle over standards is likely just beginning.
