The 7.46% Puzzle: Euro Stablecoins' Minor Role in Trading

A recent Kaiko report highlights a striking market dynamic: euro-denominated stablecoins facilitate only a fraction of crypto trading in Europe. They account for a mere 7.46% of euro-based trading volume on centralized exchanges, revealing that the vast majority of transactions still rely on direct euro fiat trading pairs.

The Market Landscape: Volume, Growth, and Key Players

The report outlines the scale of Europe's crypto activity. In 2025, the total spot trading volume for euro-denominated pairs reached €362 billion, marking a robust 31% year-over-year increase, with a monthly average of €28.5 billion.

A clear leader has emerged among trading platforms. Bitvavo captured 44% of the global euro spot trading volume between 2025 and 2026, solidifying its position ahead of competitors like Kraken and Coinbase. The average spread for euro trading pairs remained tight at 0.981 basis points, indicating reasonably efficient market liquidity.

The Stablecoin Growth Paradox: Rapid Rise, Limited Scale

Despite impressive growth—euro stablecoins have expanded their footprint by 7 to 8 times since 2024—their total market capitalization remains under $750 million. This paradox of high growth rates coupled with a relatively small absolute size explains their low share of overall trading volume. They are growing from a very small base and have yet to disrupt the dominance of traditional fiat on-ramps.

The Regulatory Catalyst: MiCA's Potential Impact on Liquidity

Kaiko's analysis points to the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework as a potential game-changer. This comprehensive regulatory regime is designed to provide clarity for service providers. Its full implementation is expected to attract more institutional participation and significantly deepen liquidity for euro-denominated crypto assets, potentially creating a more stable environment for innovations like stablecoins.

For now, European traders demonstrate a strong preference for direct euro transactions. Whether upcoming regulatory clarity and market maturation will increase stablecoin adoption for trading and settlement remains a key question for the region's crypto evolution.
