Farcaster Changes Hands Again: Network School Assumes Control

A significant shift occurred in the decentralized social networking space on October 16. Farcaster has been acquired by Network School, led by Balaji Srinivasan, from its previous owner, Neynar. This marks the platform's second ownership change within 2023, with the financial terms of the deal remaining undisclosed.

Deal Context and Team Changes

Rish, co-founder of Neynar, stated that after evaluating several acquisition offers, the company decided to transfer Farcaster's core assets—including the application, protocol codebase, and related products—to Network School. Rish cited the need for a fundamentally different operational model as Farcaster enters its next phase of growth.

Following the transaction, Rish and fellow co-founder Manan will depart. The remaining Neynar employees will join Network School to continue development work on Farcaster.

From Merkle Manufactory to Network School: Farcaster's Journey

This is not Farcaster's first change in ownership. Neynar itself had acquired the platform from its original developers, Merkle Manufactory, just this past January. That earlier transaction also included the token launch platform Clanker.

Interestingly, the recent announcement did not address the disposition of Clanker. However, community commentators suggested during a live stream that Rish is considering spinning off Clanker to seek a separate buyer for it.

More Than a Rebrand: Farcaster to Become the 'Network State Protocol'

A name change stands out as one of the most notable outcomes of this acquisition. According to an in-app announcement, Farcaster will be rebranded as the 'Network State Protocol,' signaling a shift beyond its identity as a mere social network.

The New Vision: A Network of Voluntary Digital Societies

This rebranding reflects a major upgrade in the project's ambitions. The new team aims to build a vast network comprised of voluntarily joined digital societies or communities. The long-term vision is for these digital entities to eventually establish tangible presence and impact in the physical world.

A New Participation Mechanism: The Social Smart Contract

To realize this concept, the platform's participation rules will be updated. Users will be required to actively choose to accept or reject a 'Social Smart Contract.' Those who accept will receive an on-chain access NFT, serving as their unique credential for joining this new protocol ecosystem. This design emphasizes voluntary membership and on-chain verifiability.

This acquisition and strategic pivot indicate that decentralized social protocols are exploring more structured and purpose-driven forms of digital organization, a trend worth monitoring in the evolving Web3 landscape.
