Waller’s Dovish Pivot Eases Market Jitters

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller set a notably cautious tone in his latest remarks, providing much-needed clarity to an anxious market. He indicated a clear preference for holding interest rates steady at the upcoming meeting, contingent on continued signs of disinflation. This stance, perceived as dovish, prompted an immediate reassessment of near-term policy expectations among traders.

Treasury Rally Driven by Repricing of Rate Path

The market reaction was swift and pronounced in the bond market. U.S. Treasury prices climbed across the curve on Thursday, pushing yields lower. The two-year note, which is most sensitive to shifts in Fed policy expectations, led the advance. Its yield dropped as much as 7 basis points following Waller's comments, retreating to around 4.30%.

This shift marked a reversal from earlier in the week, when heightened fears of a September rate hike had driven the two-year yield above 4.40%—a level not seen since early last year. Waller's intervention effectively tempered those hawkish bets.

Dollar Weakens as Focus Shifts to Data

The recalibration of rate expectations also filtered through to currency markets. The U.S. dollar index fell as much as 0.5%, weakening against a broad range of major peers. This movement underscores how market participants are adjusting their outlook for the Fed's policy trajectory.

Market observers noted that Waller's comments reinforce the view that a consensus for patience is forming within the Fed, pending more concrete evidence that inflation is sustainably cooling. All eyes now turn to upcoming inflation reports, which will be critical in shaping the central bank's next move.
