French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has revealed a startling surge in crypto-related kidnappings, with 77 cases recorded in the first six months of 2026 alone. This figure dramatically exceeds the 45 cases reported for the entirety of 2025, signaling a rapid escalation of this violent crime trend.

Understanding the Surge: A Perfect Storm of Factors

France is now considered one of the global hotspots for so-called “wrench attacks” targeting cryptocurrency holders. Analysts point to a confluence of factors driving this trend. The country boasts a significant crypto-adopting population, with approximately 11% of residents holding digital assets, creating a large pool of potential targets. Furthermore, the presence of headquarters and senior executives from several major crypto firms increases the country's profile and risk exposure. Security firms have also noted that a culture of ostentation and voluntary identity disclosure within some communities, combined with several historical data breaches, has made it easier for criminals to identify and single out victims.

Immediate Government Actions and Current Measures

In response to the crisis, French authorities have implemented emergency measures. A rapid alert system, designed to provide instant warnings and support to potential victims, has seen 724 people register. Coordinated law enforcement actions have led to the arrest of around 200 suspects linked to these crimes.
