The Rise and Fall of a Bitcoin Whale
The movements of crypto whales often serve as a barometer for market sentiment. On-chain analyst Yu Jin has tracked a significant entity, represented by Garrett Jin, with a legendary accumulation phase. Between May and June 2018, it amassed approximately 108,000 Bitcoin at an average price of around $7,242.
At the peak of the last bull market, this stash ballooned to a value exceeding $10 billion, cementing its status among the elite. However, the foundation of this empire began to shift, as subsequent major investments were primarily funded by the gradual sell-off of these Bitcoin holdings.
The Great Pivot: Dumping BTC for ETH
A pivotal strategy shift unfolded starting August 2025. The entity embarked on a highly consequential asset swap: selling roughly 89,000 BTC while aggressively buying about 900,000 Ethereum (ETH) at an average cost above $3,500. This massive ETH position was not held long-term; instead, it was transferred in batches to the Binance exchange throughout the first half of 2026, fueling speculation about its next move.
Leverage Misfires: A Cascade of Liquidations
The aggressive posture soon met a harsh market reality. In December 2025, the entity opened a long position on ETH via the Hyperliquid platform. Disaster struck in early February 2026 when ETH price plummeted from $3,000 to $1,800, liquidating its long contract for about 213,000 ETH (worth ~$670 million) and wiping out approximately $230 million in margin.
Compounding the losses, the entity is believed to have provided funds to Trend Research around the same period. Trend Research itself was forced to stop-loss a leveraged long position involving 651,500 ETH, incurring a loss of roughly $734 million, which significantly amplified the whale's overall financial damage.
Altcoin Bet and a Costly DeFi Slip
Venturing beyond blue-chip assets, the whale also made a concentrated altcoin play. From February to June this year, it accumulated approximately 289.6 million tokens of a project called "Binance Life," valued around $150 million, representing a staggering 28.9% of the token's total supply.
Its foray into decentralized finance (DeFi), however, turned into a costly lesson. In March, while attempting to swap 50.43 million aEthUSDT for aEthAAVE, the transaction suffered extreme slippage. It received a mere 327.2 AAVE in return, instantly realizing a loss of about $50.39 million—a stark reminder of the liquidity risks in DeFi protocols.
An Unresolved Wager: Shorting in the Red
Undeterred by the series of setbacks, the entity continued its active trading. Since July, it has maintained a short position on ZEC on the Hyperliquid platform. Current data shows this position remains underwater, with an unrealized loss of approximately $34 million. This pattern paints a picture of a once-patient accumulator transforming into an active, high-risk trader, with devastating consequences.
The journey from a $10B Bitcoin fortress to a series of nine-figure losses within a year is more than a tale of personal fortune. It stands as a potent case study for the entire crypto market on risk management. It underscores a critical lesson for all market participants: maintaining respect for market volatility, prudently managing leverage, and deeply understanding liquidity risks are non-negotiable for survival in the digital asset wilderness.
