German Chancellor Merz is set to visit Washington next Tuesday to discuss with US President Trump the implications of recent US tariff policies on EU exports.
Tensions Over Tariff Policies
An EU assessment shows that the new US tariff policies might push tariffs on certain EU exports beyond the agreed-upon thresholds, including products like cheese and agricultural goods.
- Trump announced a new 10% global tariff policy and has threatened to raise it to 15%.
- Previously, the US Supreme Court rejected Trump's attempt to use emergency powers to impose tariffs.
Commitment to Agreement
Deputy Government Spokesperson Sebastian Heilr said that Germany, in line with the EU Commission, hopes the US will uphold the tariff agreement reached last summer.
“Germany and the EU want to ensure that the US honors its commitments,” Heilr stated on Friday. “Close coordination is ongoing between the German government and the EU executive.”
