Goldman Sachs Executes Major Crypto Portfolio Reshuffle

Recent regulatory filings have revealed a strategic pivot by Goldman Sachs in its cryptocurrency investments during the first quarter of 2026. The most notable shift was the bank's complete exit from exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tied to the XRP and Solana digital assets.

Closing Positions: Exiting XRP and Solana Exposure

Detailed documents show that Goldman Sachs was a significant institutional holder of XRP ETFs in the prior quarter, with positions across products from several major asset managers valued at approximately $154 million. These holdings have now been liquidated entirely. Similarly, the bank has exited all its positions in Solana-focused ETFs, including the Grayscale Solana Trust, signaling a pause on indirect investments in these specific tokens.

Trimming Core Holdings, Boosting Equity Stakes

While stepping back from certain token ETFs, Goldman maintained substantial positions in core Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) ETFs. However, its holdings in BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF and Fidelity's Bitcoin ETF were each reduced by roughly 10%. The cut to its Ethereum ETF position was more pronounced, at around 70%.

Contrasting this cautious approach to pure-play token products, Goldman increased its investments in equities of publicly-traded companies central to the crypto ecosystem. Shares in firms providing crucial services and infrastructure, such as Circle, Coinbase, and Galaxy Digital, saw additions to the portfolio. Concurrently, the bank reduced its exposure to several Bitcoin mining and infrastructure businesses.

Decoding the Strategic Shift

Market analysts suggest this rebalancing may signal a nuanced institutional approach: moving from broad bets on various tokens to a more focused strategy on market leaders (Bitcoin and Ethereum), coupled with investments in established companies with mature business models poised to benefit from the sector's long-term growth. This "equities-over-tokens" adjustment could hint at the next phase of institutional capital allocation within the crypto space.
