AI Computing Demand Fuels Global Chip Supply Crisis

As reported by CCTV Finance, the explosive growth in artificial intelligence computing needs has triggered a severe supply shortage in the global memory chip market. This technology-driven crunch is now directly impacting consumer electronics.

Market Frenzy in Huaqiangbei: Factories Halt Shipments, Distributors Hold Stock

The effects are most visible in Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei electronics market. Multiple retailers confirmed that following a new round of price adjustment notices from the core GPU supplier to its global manufacturers, major brands have implemented comprehensive "warehouse lockdown" policies, suspending bulk shipments. This has rapidly tightened the supply of available stock throughout the distribution chain.

"New inventory isn't coming in, so what we have on hand becomes a premium commodity," described one system integrator. Distributors are widely holding back stock, further driving up prices for existing inventory.

Prices Skyrocket: Memory Up Over 300%, GPUs Spike Daily

Market data reveals staggering price increases for mainstream hardware components in Huaqiangbei:

  • Storage Products: 1TB SSD prices have risen from approximately $57 (410 RMB) last September to about $131 (950 RMB). 16GB DDR5 memory has soared from around $62 (450 RMB) to $255 (1850 RMB), a jump of over 300%. 32GB DDR5 memory now costs about $525 (3800 RMB), up from roughly $124 (900 RMB).
  • GPU Market: Fluctuations are even more dramatic. For example, the RTX 5060, priced around $317 (2300 RMB) on July 22nd, has recently climbed to nearly $414 (3000 RMB). The high-end RTX 5080 has seen a more shocking surge, rising from about $1103 (8000 RMB) to around $1655 (12000 RMB), equivalent to a daily increase of nearly $140.

This price storm, driven by both upstream supply constraints and booming downstream AI demand, shows little sign of abating in the short term. For ordinary consumers and PC builders, a "wait-and-see" approach may no longer be viable.
