Major Crypto Investment Scam Dismantled in Greece: Over €8 Million Lost

Greek law enforcement has successfully dismantled a criminal network operating a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme. The operation led to the arrest of 17 individuals, a notable detail being that 9 of those detained are serving military personnel.

How the Scheme Operated

Investigations reveal the scam operated as a classic pyramid scheme, relying on specific tactics to lure victims:

  • Referral Incentives: Investors were encouraged to recruit new members with promises of increased returns.
  • False Promises: The group claimed investors would double their money after 50 days if they first doubled their initial capital.
  • Withdrawal Freeze: Recently, the operators disabled withdrawal functions, effectively trapping investors' funds.

Authorities estimate approximately 10,000 people across the country fell victim, with average investments around €800, pushing the total estimated losses beyond €8 million.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

During the raids, police seized roughly €280,000 in connection with the case. The arrested individuals are now under interrogation as the investigation continues to trace the full extent of the financial network and identify any additional accomplices.

This case serves as a stark reminder for potential investors to exercise extreme caution with crypto projects that guarantee high, risk-free returns or rely heavily on member recruitment for profitability.
