Hanwha Group Bets Big on Tokenization, Takes Pole Position in Securitize

A recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveals a significant shift in the ownership of Securitize, a leading platform for tokenizing real-world assets. South Korea's industrial conglomerate, Hanwha Group, has emerged as the company's largest single shareholder, with a total stake of 9.6%, representing over 15.68 million shares.

A New Leading Shareholder: Industrial Capital Moves In

This investment positions Hanwha Group ahead of Securitize's established crypto-native backers. The group now holds a larger stake than Blockchain Capital, a prominent venture firm focused on digital assets, which owns 6.0%, and also surpasses the 5.4% stake held by co-founder Carlos Domingo.

The SEC filing details the multi-pronged approach Hanwha used to build its position. The stake was acquired through several group entities working in concert:

  • A private equity fund under the group holds 5.9%.
  • H Foundation, a subsidiary of Hanwha Systems, holds 3.1%.
  • Hanwha Investment & Securities holds approximately 0.6%.

Beyond Securitize: Hanwha's Broader Digital Asset Strategy

The move to lead Securitize's shareholder roster is part of a broader, aggressive push by Hanwha into the blockchain ecosystem. Its financial arm, Hanwha Investment & Securities, has been particularly active this year.

The company has allocated a total of 58 billion Korean won into foundational blockchain projects. This includes investments in data platform Xangle, Web3 infrastructure firm Kresus, and Digital Asset, the company behind the institutional-focused Canton Network.

Perhaps more significantly, Hanwha Investment & Securities injected an additional 597.8 billion won into Dunamu, the parent company of South Korea's dominant crypto exchange, Upbit. This increased its stake in Dunamu to 9.84%, deepening its ties to a critical gateway for digital asset trading in the region.

From data and protocols to exchanges and now a flagship RWA tokenization platform, Hanwha Group is methodically assembling a portfolio that spans the digital asset value chain. Its controlling stake in Securitize is not merely an investment; it serves as a strategic bridge connecting its traditional financial interests with the innovative potential of blockchain technology.
