Hong Kong Clearing Exposes Sophisticated Phishing Scam Exploiting Virtual Wallets
Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited has issued a public warning about an emerging online fraud scheme. Criminals have set up convincing fake websites designed to trap unsuspecting users, particularly those engaged in online transactions.
How the Scam Operates: A Two-Step Deception
The fraudulent sites often masquerade as “Online Buyer Protection Programs” or similar services, creating an illusion of legitimacy. The scam typically unfolds in two phases:
- Data Harvesting Phase: The site requests highly sensitive personal information under the guise of “real-name verification” or “security upgrades,” including ID card numbers, photographs of the ID, and personal mobile numbers.
- Financial Entrapment Phase: To lure victims further, the scam promises cash rewards or “verification bonuses.” Users are directed to a fake virtual wallet interface to “top up” or “activate” their account. Subsequent attempts to withdraw funds fail, or the account is compromised.
Official Advice and Preventive Measures
The clearing house clarified that these sites have no connection to its legitimate services. The ultimate goal is not only to steal funds but to collect comprehensive personal data for potential identity theft.
To safeguard assets and privacy, the public is advised to:
- Exercise extreme caution with any unfamiliar website requesting detailed ID documents and numbers.
- Avoid being tempted by small cash rewards into skipping verification of a website's authenticity.
- Carefully check website URLs, company names, and official contact channels. Do not blindly trust links received via phone calls, texts, or social media.
If you have already submitted personal information or funds to a suspicious site, or suspect you are a victim, preserve all evidence and report the incident to the Hong Kong Police immediately to mitigate potential losses.
