Hong Kong Tech Stocks Hit by Selling Pressure
On October 15, the technology sector in the Hong Kong stock market underperformed. The benchmark Hang Seng Index closed down 1.03%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index, which tracks major tech companies, saw a steeper decline of 2.72. Market sentiment turned cautious as funds flowed out of multiple technology subsectors.
Two Core Tech Sectors Lead the Decline
The day's losses were concentrated in the optical communications and semiconductor sectors. This suggests investor concerns about the near-term outlook or supply-demand dynamics in these industries.
- Optical Communications: Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable saw its share price drop over 13%. Cambridge Technology fell 8%, and InnoLight Technology also declined more than 7%.
- Semiconductors: Companies like TianShu ZhiXin, Biren Technology, and Montage Technology all fell over 11%. Other semiconductor firms including Hygon and Huahong Grace posted significant losses. Industry giant SMIC closed down nearly 4%.
Other Tech Areas Also Affected
The weakness was not confined to hardware. Recent high-flyers in the AI model space also pulled back, with Zhipu dropping over 10% and MINIMAX falling more than 12%. Additionally, shares of well-known tech firm Lenovo Group plunged over 14%, drawing particular market attention.
Overall, the broad-based decline across multiple tech subsectors indicates a contraction in overall market risk appetite. Investors are reassessing the growth narratives and valuation levels of related companies.
