Key Enhancement Coming to Hyperliquid's TWAP Orders

Hyperliquid is set to implement a significant upgrade to its TWAP (Time-Weighted Average Price) order logic, specifically for orders with stop prices. This change, highlighted by co-founder Jeff, focuses on improving order flexibility.

The Shift: Auto-Resume Replaces Termination

Under the current system, if the market's mark price hits the boundary set for a TWAP order (e.g., a maximum buy price), the entire remaining execution plan is canceled. To continue, the user must manually place a new order.

The new rule introduces a pause-and-resume mechanism: When the price boundary is breached, execution pauses. Crucially, if the price moves back within the acceptable range before the order's total time window expires, the order automatically resumes and completes the remaining trades.

How It Works in Practice

Consider a trader setting a 2-hour TWAP order to buy HYPE with a maximum price of $80.

  • Old Logic: If HYPE's price jumps to $81, the buy plan stops completely. Even if the price drops back to $79 within the 2 hours, no further buying occurs.
  • New Logic: At $81, execution pauses. If the price falls back to $79 (below the $80 cap) before the 2-hour window ends, the order resumes automatically to finish the planned purchases.

The same principle applies in reverse for sell orders with a minimum price limit.

TWAP Orders: A Quick Refresher

TWAP is a strategy tool designed for larger trades. It splits a single large order into smaller chunks executed evenly over a specified period (from 5 minutes to 7 days on Hyperliquid). This helps minimize market impact and slippage, aiming for an execution price close to the period's average.

Hyperliquid currently enforces a $100 minimum order size for TWAP functionality.

This upgrade essentially makes TWAP orders more resilient. Instead of being canceled by short-term, minor price fluctuations, orders can now wait out temporary adverse moves. This increases the likelihood of full execution for longer-duration strategies, providing professional traders and fund managers with a more sophisticated and patient execution tool.
