Institutional Bitcoin Buying Cools Sharply as Weekly Net Inflow Plummets Over 90%

Fresh market data reveals a sudden cooldown in Bitcoin acquisition enthusiasm among global public companies last week. For the week ending October 12, the net purchase amount of Bitcoin by these firms (excluding mining companies) stood at a mere $22.5 million. This figure represents a cliff-like drop of over 90% compared to two weeks prior, signaling a significant shift in institutional capital flows in the short term.

Strategic Capital Bucks the Trend, Continues Bitcoin Accumulation

Against the backdrop of overall weakened buying, some long-term Bitcoin bulls opted for a contrarian approach. Notably, Strategic Capital purchased 250 Bitcoin last week at an average price of approximately $86,194, spending close to $22 million. This addition brings its total Bitcoin holdings to 848,250. The firm's consistent buying aligns with its long-standing strategy of treating Bitcoin as a primary treasury reserve asset.

Bitcoin Activity from Other Corporate Players

Beyond Strategic Capital, several other public companies disclosed Bitcoin-related activity last week:

  • Japan's Metaplanet: The company did not make any new Bitcoin purchases last week. Its pause in buying, as one of the more active Bitcoin holders in the Asian market, has drawn attention.
  • Bitcoin Japan: This firm, which combines Bitcoin reserves with frontier AI investment, bought 5.8847 BTC on October 7 at around $84,706.34, bringing its total holdings to 17.8035 BTC.
  • Bitmine: This Ethereum-focused asset firm announced the acquisition of 1 additional Bitcoin on October 5, without disclosing the purchase amount. Its publicly known Bitcoin holdings now total 214.

Total Corporate Bitcoin Holdings Edge Higher, Market Share Remains Steady

Despite the sharp decline in weekly net purchases, the total Bitcoin holdings of tracked global public companies still saw a marginal increase, thanks to continued accumulation by firms like Strategic Capital. These companies now collectively hold approximately 1,163,359 BTC, a 0.3% rise from two weeks ago.

At current market prices, this stash is valued at roughly $96.57 billion, accounting for 5.8% of Bitcoin's total circulating supply. This proportion has remained relatively stable, underscoring the significant influence public companies wield on the overall structure and price stability of the Bitcoin market as a key category of institutional holders.

Market observers note that such volatility in weekly data can stem from various factors, including macro sentiment, short-term price corrections, and individual corporate treasury management. Whether this indicates a longer-term shift in trend requires further observation.
