Iran Alleges US Breach of Bilateral Pact, Announces Oversight Plan
During trilateral talks involving Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan held in Doha on July 2, the Iranian delegation leveled a significant accusation regarding US-Iran relations. Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the technical negotiation team, stated that the United States has acted in violation of the previously established Memorandum of Understanding between the two nations.
Talks Center on Alleged US Violations
The Iranian presentation outlined several key areas of alleged non-compliance by the US. The primary focus was on Article One of the MoU, which pertains to commitments to end hostilities in Lebanon. Iran contends that the US has failed to uphold this central provision.
The discussions also addressed recent US military activities in the region. This included reports of enhanced US weapon deployments and troop reinforcements, alongside statements from American officials that Iran characterizes as threatening and interventionist.
Iran Insists on Integrity of Agreement
Araghchi emphasized a fundamental principle during the talks. He argued that all commitments within the US-Iran MoU form an indivisible whole. They must be viewed and implemented comprehensively and consistently, rather than in a selective or fragmented manner.
New Direct Oversight Mechanism Announced
In response to the current situation, Iran announced a concrete step. Araghchi declared that Iran will form a dedicated oversight group. The core function of this body will be to systematically report and review any violations related to the MoU through established direct communication channels.
The establishment of this mechanism signals Iran's intent to adopt a more proactive and institutionalized approach to monitoring the implementation of the agreement, aiming to ensure mutual commitments are honored.
