Iran Accuses U.S. of Breaching International Law with New Sanction Threats
During a press conference held on August 24, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh addressed key regional issues and Iran-U.S. relations. The focal point was Washington's recent threat to impose a new round of sanctions against Tehran.
Sanctions Labeled as "Economic War," Iran Vows Comprehensive Response
Khatibzadeh asserted that the U.S. portrayal of its planned measures as the "toughest" sanctions effectively constitutes an "economic war." He argued that such actions disregard fundamental principles of free trade between nations and represent a blatant violation of state sovereignty.
"We are aware of the economic pressures and commercial difficulties inside the country," Khatibzadeh stated. "These are part of the pressures the American government has exerted against the Iranian people for decades." He added that the Iranian government had anticipated these challenges and is employing all available means to counter and mitigate the impact of the sanctions.
Reaffirmation of Self-Defense Rights and Condemnation of U.S. Actions
Beyond economic matters, the spokesperson reiterated Iran's security stance. He emphasized that, under international law, Iran reserves the right to take necessary defensive actions against any source of aggression. This remark was seen as an indirect response to ongoing regional tensions.
Khatibzadeh concluded by stating that the very act of threatening new sanctions is a serious breach of international law. Iran's position is firm: it will not compromise on its sovereignty and is prepared to confront external economic pressure.
